If you’re into performance art, London is the place to visit over the next years as the research project Performance Matters kicks off a range of events with artists, theorists, and others doing good stuff. Run by Gavin Butt (Goldsmiths), Adrian Heathfield (Rohampton) and Loius Keanan (Live Art Development Agency) together with Owen G. Parry and Augusto Corrieri, Performance Matters is a thing to follow.

While I’m particularly excited about next year’s queer extravaganza under the theme of Trashing Performance (of which I’m taking part as an associative researcher, so I’m involved – no detached commenting here), this year’s symposium on Performing Ideas looks to be great as well.

If you’re in London between 2-9 October, look into the preliminary program on Performance Matter’s homepage. The workshops, lectures, panels, discussions, and performances includes a wide range of amazing participants such as Janine Antoni, Anne Bean, Wafaa Bilal, Maaike Bleeker, Silvia Bottiroli, Jonathan Burrows, Rose English, Tim Etchells, Matthew Goulish, Hannah Hurtzig, Shannon Jackson, Janez Janša, Joe Kelleher, Ong Keng Sen, Bojana Kunst, Boyan Manchev, Fred Moten, Rabih Mroué, Giulia Palladini, Peggy Phelan, Heike Roms, Lara Shalson, Julie Tolentino and many others.

The Brooklyn-based band and peformance collective MEN is visiting Scandinavia in May! The group started in 2007 when the Le Tigre members JD Samson and Johanna Fateman started to write new songs, collaborating with HIRSUITE members Michael O’Niell (Princess, Ladybug Transistor) and Ginger Brooks Takahashi (LTTR, The Ballet).

Their tour plans for Scandinavia looks like this:

Yesterday, as a part of the documentary film festival CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, the artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset presented their theatre/film piece Drama Queens (2007), where different well-known modernist and contemporary sculptures play the leading parts. The play starts with some quite distressed sculptures, not comfortable of being removed from the white cube and put on stage in the black box of the theatre.

During the 45 minute performance, the overtly fallic and quite angry Untitled (by Ulrich Rückriem) meets the somewhat depressed and sulky Walking man (by Giacometti), while the chatty girl Elegy III (by Barbara Hepworth) get a slight crush on Cloud Shepherd (by Jean Arp). The hipster Rabbit (by Jeff Koons) wants to disco, while Four Cubes (by Sol Le Witt) resites theoretical statements. Suddenly a Brillo box enters the scene and all agree that it is quite queer…

While Elmgreen and Dragset’s Drama Queens represents a funny take on the art historical discourse on sculpture – from modernist seriousness to postmodernist (neo)pop – the Norwegian artist group Text Fukkers (Marte Hodne Haugen, Marthe Wathinsen, Espen Lomsdalen) takes this several steps further in their fantastic performance-lecture on “Minimalism and the Rethoric of Power”. I forrige uke satt den norske queerperformancegruppen TOYBOYS opp sin nye produksjon “The Man at the Tramstop” på Dansen Hus i Oslo. TOYBOYS har brukt teksten “Mannen på holdeplassen” av den norske folkekjære visesangeren og forfatteren Alf Prøysens (1914-1970), som grunnlag for stykket som omhandler dualitet og tvetydighet med et queert perspektiv.

Terje Tjøme Mossige og Ulf Nilseng, som utgjør kjernen i TOYBOYS, forteller til norske Klassekampen at de har tatt utgangspunkt i avsløringen om Alf Prøysens bi- eller homoseksualitet som biografen Ove Røsbak kom med i en avisdebatt sommeren 2004. Saken fikk stor oppmerksomhet, og mange kjente personligheter i Norge gikk ut og fordømte “avsløringene” om nasjonalhelten Prøysen. Mossige forklarer deres motivasjon til Klassekampen på følgende måte:

“Vi tror at vi er åpne om dette i Norge i dag, men det ble jo tydelig i løpet av denne debatten at det er vi jo slett ikke. Dette var jo ikke en gang noe man spekulerte i, men et fakta. Etter de vitnesbyrdene som kom på bordet kan man ikke tvile på det lenger, og da er det merkelig at man «ikke vil rippe opp i det». Når man så ser hvilken dualisme som egentlig lå i ham, så er det klart at det er interessant for oss som kunstnere. Vi ser at det er noe som mangler i fremstillingen av hans tekster.”

TOYBOYS har gitt stykket en engelsk tittel, fordi det skal på turné, blant annet til Guatemala og Mexico. La oss håpe det også kommer til flere steder i Norge og Norden.

I forbindelse med stykke ble det også arrangert et seminar om Alf Prøysen den 19. april i Oslo, der blant annet litteraturviteren Britt Andersen fra NTNU i Trondheim nyleste forfatterskapet i lys av biografidebatten. Martin Grüner Larsen har et fint intervju med Andersen i Klassekampen, der hun diskuterer hvordan Prøysens mer sårbare tekster er blitt sett bort fra og glemt, fordi man har insistert på å gjøre ham til en snill barnehageonkel. Prøysens tekster har fått en ny dimensjon – og godt er det!
